HISTORY OF AUTOMATION

The technology of automation has evolved from the related field of mechanization, which had its beginnings in the Industrial Revolution. Mechanization refers to the replacement of human (or animal) power with mechanical power of some form. The driving force behind mechanization has been humankind’s propensity to create tools and mechanical devices.

The word automation is commonplace today, but up until the 1800s, it was a notion that only existed in books. Science fiction regularly described automated devices we take as commonplace today, which back then could only be written of.

Automation is defined as “the technique, method or system of operating or controlling a process by highly automatic means, as by electronic devices, reducing human intervention to a minimum???. That is to say – mechanics that do the work for us. These come in the form of robotics, appliances, industry, business and many more facets of life.
